This course provides a practical understanding of Master–Pilot Relations and the essential shipboard information used during pilotage. It covers effective Master–Pilot Exchange, communication, cooperation, shared situational awareness, and the respective responsibilities of the Master, Pilot and Bridge Team.
The course also explains the purpose and correct use of the Pilot Card, Wheelhouse Poster and Manoeuvring Booklet, including the key ship-specific information they contain, such as draft, displacement, propulsion, steering characteristics, thrusters, stopping distances, turning circles, manoeuvring limitations and emergency procedures.
The focus is on helping Masters and bridge teams use these documents effectively to establish a shared understanding of the vessel’s manoeuvring characteristics and the pilotage plan, thereby supporting safer navigation, effective bridge teamwork and better decision-making during harbour manoeuvring and pilotage operations.
