This course provides a practical understanding of dangerous ship motions in heavy weather, focusing on Synchronous Rolling, Parametric Rolling, Pooping and Broaching. Students will learn the causes, conditions, warning signs and risks associated with each phenomenon and understand how ship design, wave characteristics, speed, course and loading condition influence vessel behaviour.
The course focuses on the Master’s decision-making process, including weather assessment, course and speed adjustments, stability considerations and preventive actions to reduce the risk of excessive rolling, loss of steering control, cargo damage and structural stress. Through practical scenarios, students will learn to recognize the difference between these phenomena and determine what action should be taken before the situation becomes critical.
